This Black Bean Dip is so incredibly easy and only requires 5 ingredients. It makes the perfect quick snack or simple party appetizer.
I’m not a huge snacker. I prefer sitting down for meals that are filling enough to last me until the next one. But every once in awhile when I have a hankering for a snack, I whip up this easy Black Bean Dip!
This 5-ingredient recipe also makes a super quick and easy lunch. It’s our go-to midday meal when we have activities all day and not much time for cooking.
What I love most about this recipe is that it only requires heating up the beans and then adding the toppings. The cooking is minimal and you could always skip this step if you don’t care about the dip being warm.
What You Need to Make this Easy Black Bean Dip
With just 5 ingredients, you can make a creamy, satisfying, and spicy crowd-pleasing dip.
- Olive oil
- Refried black beans
- Hot sauce
- Chopped tomatoes
- Diced avocado
You need olive oil for warming up the refried black beans. While this step isn’t necessary it does make the beans softer and creamier.
A layer of hot sauce brings in some much-needed heat.
Chopped tomatoes and diced avocado make up the top layer of the dish. They’re refreshing, cool, and add a little texture.
Serve the Black Bean Dip with a few squeezes of lime and tortilla chips.
How to Make Black Bean Dip
Drizzle the olive oil into a medium frying pan. Heat over medium. Scoop the refried black beans into the pan and use a spatula to spread it around evenly. Warm for about 2-3 minutes and then turn off the heat.
Spread the black beans into a shallow bowl or small serving dish. The key is to not use a dish that is too deep, otherwise you’ll eat through the toppings too quickly and just be left with beans.
Pour the hot sauce onto the black beans and spread evenly.
Sprinkle on the tomatoes and avocado evenly across the dip.
Squeeze a little lime juice and serve with tortilla chips.
Variations & Notes
Keep it simple or check out these variations and notes for changing things up!
- Add a layer of vegan sour cream! Make sure it is softened first, and then spread it on top of the beans, before the hot sauce. Alternatively, you could stir the hot sauce and sour cream together and spread it on top of the beans.
- You could add vegan cheese to this recipe if you crave that cheesy flavor. One option would be to skip the frying pan and add the beans to a glass dish with cheese sprinkled on top and bake it in the oven until the cheese is melted. Another option is to simply sprinkle cheese on top of the hot sauce layer. Depends on if you want melty or cool cheese in your bean dip recipe!
- Additional topping options include sliced green onion, diced bell pepper, or chopped cilantro.
- You don’t have to make this dip with black beans! You could swap for refried pinto beans.
Serve Hot, Warm or Cold!
I warm up the beans because it makes them creamier and softer. By the time they leave the pan and the rest of the toppings are added, the dip is room temperature. I think this is perfect, especially for a summer day when hot dip doesn’t sound appealing.
If you want to take it a step further, you can always place the dip in the fridge if you prefer it cold.
If you’d like your Black Bean Dip to be served hot, then I recommend adding a step to my instructions below. Be sure to make this dip in an oven-safe dish. After spreading the layer of hot sauce on top of the beans, place the dip in the oven until hot. Wait until removing the dip from the oven to add the tomato and avocado.
How Long Does Black Bean Dip Last?
You can save this recipe in the fridge for 3-4 days. The avocado may not look as fresh and appetizing after the first day, but it is still safe to eat. Squeezing fresh lime juice on top of the dip will help preserve the avocado, so don’t skip this step!
